I help institutions of higher education and community agencies keep students safe from substance use through the use of research and evaluation, technical assistance and professional development (on statewide, regional and institutional levels).We are currently focusing on the following three (3) key strategic initiatives that will aid in the decrease of negative consequences of substance use experienced by Louisiana’s collegiate communities. The initiatives include:• Increasing participation in the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey.• Achieving 100% compliance statewide with the Biennial Review and Annual Notification processes as mandated by the U.S. Department of Education.• Equipping institutions across the state with the necessary technical assistance and professional development to implement opioid education, training and reporting policies.If your institution would like help on any of the topics above, please do not hesitate to email me at: allison.smith@largents.edu

• Serve as the Projector Director (and LSU liaison) for the statewide biennial administration of the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey to undergraduate students enrolled at all Louisiana institutions of higher education, while also developing reports for external partners concerning Louisiana college student substance use.• Oversee research and evaluation of statewide collegiate student substance use, facilitate statewide, regional and instituional professional development opportunities and troubleshoot technical assistance inquiries for institutional and community partners. • Oversee any and all grants directly impacting the service of the LaCASU Office and develop internal and external budgets from multiple funding streams. Also, responsible for direct personnel hiring, supervision, and professional development within the LaCASU Office.

• Research promotional alcohol pricing in collegiate communities and the influx of social media usage by bars and restaurants.• Conduct local, regional and national presentations on substance use in Louisiana colleges and current prevention efforts.• Provide technical assistance to and disseminate communications for the Louisiana Higher Education Coalition to Reduce Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (LaHEC) and the Baton Rouge Collegiate Alliance (BRCA).•Plan and organize statewide regional trainings to foster coalition building among neighboring universities.•Coordinate annual statewide professional development summit, targeting (but not limited to) institutions of higher education (IHEs), prevention professionals, community stakeholders, and law enforcement personnel.• Conduct research on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among college students in Louisiana.•Analyze, compile and disseminate statewide assessments of regional trainings and annual summits.• Advocate for college-level and local policies to prevent underage drinking.• Panelist for MADD's Youth Public Policy Institute (YPPI), covering areas of "Happy Hour" promotions, laws, and ordinances in local bars and restaurants.•Conduct and provide research on the relationship to alcohol outlet density and violent crimes to local council members to obtain a temporary liquor license moratorium in certain areas of Baton Rouge.

• Assist with editing drafts of “white papers” on underage drinking.• Help to build and maintain a cross-division coalition on underage drinking.• Create voice over scripts for grantees of Faith and Community-Based Initiatives grants for HIV/AIDS Prevention promotional tools.• Use geo-mapping to help to best determine where SAMHSA’s services are currently in the gulf states, with regards to accessibility in the anticipation of increased mental health need and substance abuse in the wake of the BP Oil Spill.

• Assist with Legislative Breakfasts to help with lobbying efforts• Maintain and update electronic contacts database of state lawmakers• Participate in Children’s Cabinet Committee Hearings on behalf of NFP• Track legislature and bills effecting funding for and overall child welfare in the State of Louisiana

Work with LSU's student-athletes to prepare weekly schedules, assist in conflict management skills, scheduling tutoring sessions and organization skills.
