About Anderson P. Smith, Ph.D.

Dr. Anderson P.C. Smith is the Assistant Director for Research Compliance Education for the Office of Research Compliance and Training at Columbia University. His work focuses on creating educational programs on research compliance and research ethics for the Columbia research community, including faculty and staff, students, and post-doctoral research fellows. Dr. Smith earned his Ph.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University. He teaches creative writing in both medium and maximum-security prisons in New York through Rehabilitation Through the Arts. He holds a Master's in Philosophy and a Master's in Education for the teaching of English, and a Master's in Fine Arts for Creative Writing, with a Bachelor's degree in Communications. Anderson has worked one-on-one with students in various stages of their academic careers on every aspect of the writing process. Dr. Smith has extensive tutoring and teaching experience, having facilitated and co-facilitated literacy and creative writing workshops in both medium and maximum-security prisons in New York and New York City's main jail complex, Rikers Island. Further, he has conducted seminars and lectures in various conferences such as the American Educational Research Association (AERA), National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA), and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) around literacy and metacognition. Anderson's research agenda, like his teaching, reflects his commitment to social justice and literacy while supporting teachers in ways to question and change inequitable school systems. His dissertation investigated the self-reflection and resilience necessary for self-rehabilitation that emerged with active participation in a digital book club community. To address his topic of inquiry, Dr. Smith adopts an exploratory qualitative research approach to look across the perspectives of men and women with criminal conviction histories at ways in which a work of fiction could promote self-reflection and resilience necessary for self-rehabilitation. Moreover, he explores ways in which literature can be in service in getting adolescent and adult members of society to think metacognitively about their relationship to reading and writing and recognize that their paradigms are alive in each process. Therefore, better readers are better and informed writers.
