I am an experienced decision-maker, lawyer, mediator, chairman and company director. I practised as a civil and commercial litigation solicitor at international and Australian law firms for 21 years, until my appointment as President of the Mental Health Tribunal of Western Australia. As a partner and practice group head, I led high-performing teams and was a trusted adviser to insurers and financial services clients, Government, hospitals and health practitioners, aged and disability care providers, the infrastructure sector, and universities. I appeared as counsel at inquests, inquiries and as a trial and appellate advocate before State and Federal courts. I’ve also served on various inquisitorial and adversarial tribunals/ boards/ advisory councils, taught law, and supervised research. As a first generation immigrant and LGBTQIA+ person of Chinese descent, I bring my lived experience of diversity and disability to advance good governance, sound public administration, and fair decisions.
