The production at the winery is predominantly Shiraz (by volume), although good quality Cabernet and a range of lesser known varieties may be found, such as Primitivo/Zinfandel. The winery operates as a contract facility for many local producers, including Gemtree Vineyards. The Gemtree brand has existed since 1998, 18 years after the Buttery family bought their first vineyard. Previous to the purchase of the Kangarilla Rd winery Gemtree and the the Buttery family have only had vineyards and processed by contract through the same winery. Gemtree brand is about winemaking from the heart with a strong focus of sustainability. Many Gemtree wines are organic certified and the new Gemtree winery has become the first Australian winery certified organic in China and is amongst the first in the world. My role at the Gemtree winery involved the continuation of my vintage role and experience in many aspects of post-vintage work. This includes racking wines off lees from tank, racking from barrel, topping and sulphuring, minor additions, transferring finished wines off ullage, tartrate and protein stabilisation, pre-bottling blending, etc. This work has helped expand my knowledge of the processes involved in the winemaking process beyond the vintage period and has been an invaluable reinforcement of the knowledge gained in my tertiary studies.I worked at the winery from January 2013 through to July 2013, I continued working in the cellar door for a few months after which I returned for a second vintage season in 2014, finishing in May 2014.
