Prior to coming to Texas Christian University (TCU), she served as an assistant and associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of Central Missouri (Warrensburg, MO) and an assistant professor at The Citadel (Charleston, SC). Her work has explored the lived experiences of victims of violent crime, with much of her work focusing on unsolved murder cases, families of homicide victims, and sexual assault/abuse survivors. She has received multiple teaching and research awards, authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles and chapters. She also co-authored an academic book and has delivered countless research presentations. Her work has helped advocate for law enforcement/survivor relations and community/university policy changes, and served as a platform for survivors' voices to be heard. Ashley has served in the US and internationally as a leading scholar in cold case homicides, being asked to serve as a keynote speaker/spokesperson at various law enforcement, survivor and media events and to conduct workshops and seminars for academics and professionals serving the survivors of violent crime.
