I'm a teacher, administrator, and a historian who loves books and numbers. By training, I'm a social historian of the Middle East, Ottoman Empire, Sephardic Jews, and Israel (not necessarily in that order). My Book, "Natural Disasters in the Ottoman Empire: Plague, Famine, and Other Misfortunes," was published by Cambridge University Press in November 2014. My next book will be a new social history of Ottoman Jewry. I have received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities to write it. I expect it to be ready for submission to a publisher in 2021. I'm also the author of over 20 articles and encyclopedia entries. Before assuming the directorship of the Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston, I served as the associate director of the Jewish Studies Program at Ball State University, where I was also the chair of the Faculty Council, the governance body of all faculty. Before working at Ball State, I have taught Middle East, Jewish, and Israeli history and politics as a visiting professor at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, and Emory University in Atlanta.
