About Betsy C.
My work focuses on the practices of successful teams at the forefront of technological innovation.. Increasingly, I have been exploring issues of pluralism and embodiment as they relate to AI and Internet of Things.Earlier in my career I was the founder of 2 high-tech ventures. I also founded a non-profit devoted to supporting entrepreneurs (Harvard Alumni Entrepreneurs) that now has over 10,,000 members around the world. And, in a more intra-preneurial role, I helped position a software company for a $1.5B acquisition by Lucent.In academic settings, I have redesigned the entrepreneurship minor in the PSU College of Information Sciences and Technology to highlight the interpersonal skills of founders, the importance of making interpretation visible, and the role of the human body in digital entrepreneurship. I also have facilitated informal courses on the archaeology of the ancient near east at the Semitic Museum at Harvard, and co-directed the Community Innovation Lab at MIT. While studying at Yale, I wrote a play which has had readings in upstate NY and London. I continued to work on this play as a Visiting Scholar at the Hastings Center, and the play has become a part of the curriculum in some university courses about hospice care. My work has been supported by NSF and honored by the Academy of Management. I also have been named a Fulbright Specialist and a UNESCO expert.I am a Research Affiliate with the Penn State Arts & Design Research Incubator. I also have had a Virtual Residency with Jacob's Pillow (Dance for Social Justice). My AI research and choreography overlapped in the creation of an arts-based intervention based on human gestures and post-human interpretations. This work debuted the at Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at Cambridge University in 2023.I am a member of the Explorers Club and the Alan Turing Institute's Arts and AI group. I have been appointed to the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Alumni Council. I also have been an invited participant in the Smithsonian Apollo Dialogues Workshop to mark the 50th anniversaries of the NASA moon landings. Previously I served as a sub-committee co-chair for the Harvard Alumni Association Board of Directors. I also have been an invited judge for the MIT Innovation, Development, Enterprise, Action and Service (IDEAS) competition. Core interests: Entrepreneurship as practice, Human interaction with AI and Internet of Things, Qualitative methods (Ethnomethodology, Ethnography, Video Ethnography, Conversation Analysis, Embodiment), Teams and teamwork.
