About Dr Beatriz Garcia

Dr Beatriz Garcia is Associate Director at the Centre for Cultural Value, member of the Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission at the International Olympic Committee and former member of the European Capital of Culture Selection & Monitoring Panel. She has directed international academic research at the University of Liverpool since 2005.Beatriz has been at the forefront of research on the rhetoric and impact of culture-led city regeneration interventions since 1999. Major projects include a review of all available evidence on the first three decades of the European Capital of Culture programme (ECoC); the pioneering Impacts 08 programme, a longitudinal 10-year study on the socio-economic and cultural impacts of Liverpool as 2008 ECoC; the first nation-wide legacy assessment of a Cultural Olympiad, focusing on the London 2012 Olympic Games; and the first comprehensive study of the 20-year legacy of hosting an ECoC, focusing on Glasgow post-1990. To conduct this research, Beatriz has been funded by national and international bodies such as the European Parliament, European Commission, International Olympic Committee, British Council, British Academy and Research Councils UK. Pleased to have been appointed Advisory Board member for the EU-H2020 Social Platform for Heritage Impact Assessment (SoPHIA). I’ll be advising on the development of a holistic framework for the capture of the symbolic, cultural, physical, social, and economic value of Heritage interventions across Europe. I will make special emphasis on the importance of developing credible measures to document symbolic and cultural value, while fully engaging with discussion around the strengths and weaknesses of better established economic, social and physical measures. The SoPHIA platform will start by mapping existing literature and evidence from relevant sectors, including the work I have lead on the multiple impacts of large-scale interventions such as the European Capital of Culture programme.
