Who am I – I am a problem solver. I’m a technical developer. I’m a people manager. I believe in removing barriers in the software delivery pipeline. I believe in empowered self-running teams. I believe trusting and honest teams will produce better code than individuals.Someone once told me that my greatest strength is that I was a developer who talks like a business person. But I’ve realized it sometimes goes beyond those two – I can bring whatever strengths are needed to the situations I am in. I can have the architectural discussion about CI/CD pipelines, the technical discussion about the pattern / data structure to use, the high level strategy discussion with upper management, the specific project / issue planning discussion, the budget discussion, the personal development discussion, and many more. My strength is that I care a lot more about the challenge and the accomplishment than I do about the role I play in getting us there.I love teams – getting a group of people moving toward single goals is a powerful thing. My leadership style leans heavily on honesty, team-ownership, and transparency. I help those around me have all the information they need to be their most effective. I suggest, I lead, I run ceremonies/meetings, I encourage. I will gladly bring my expertise to the table, volunteer to tackle anything, but I think it’s important to have a team where all strong voices and backgrounds can bring their expertise. I believe a team should own its own process, challenge it, and hold each other accountable to it.A few words that describe how I work – big picture, analytical, honest, imaginative, curious, objective, calm, and straightforward. I have a good time when I work. I lead through understanding, through context, through teaching and training, through personal conversation and accountability.

Senior Software Development ManagerEvo Snap* Nov 2018 - Oct 2019As a Senior Manager I support four teams, focusing on blockers and communication, expectations and progress. I dive deep in production issues, while focusing the team on long term priorities. I push for long term ci/cd improvements, coding standards, improved communication, build chain improvements, and team centered efforts.I worked hand in hand with our QA manager to build a new code-heavy python automated test suite, to shorten feedback loops on code regressions. We built a tool that makes complex tests quick to write, populating test data across many endpoint versions, running against each endpoint, soap and rest endpoints.

Software Development ManagerEvo Snap* Mar 2018 - Nov 2018Leading a team on a payments processing platform for internal and external vendors to integrate to for global and multi-channel credit card and payments processing. I manage the process and development efforts for two backend API teams, pushing for better developer communication with each other, QA, DevOps, and Systems groups.I have been able to learn the extremely complex set of systems, variations on types of payments supported, and how the code sits together. When needed I put my head down in the code to help resolve production issues, blocked developers, or for code reviews. I'm a hands on manager, leading the team from within the team.I work hard to make the space for tech debt that slows us down, trying to move the code forward without causing defects and regressions. As a team first manager I work to understand the strengths, weaknesses, and goals of each team member and help support them as they grow. I try to balance work that pushes the team forward. When possible I mentor each developer with suggestions, projects, and questions that help them understand their coding style better.

Senior .Net DeveloperGorilla Logic May 2016 - Aug 2016Broomfield, Colorado, UsThis really falls under the MakeMusic umbrella above - I was a Senior .Net Developer for Gorilla Logic placed at MakeMusic, Inc (a Peaksware company). I helped develop many backend APIs and a front end site to help teachers manage the classrooms, teachers, students, and other school-level concerns for organizations who use an online SmartMusic platform to help students master playing an instrument.I was converted to full time employee prior to the end of the contract, which was the goal of the contract-to-hire position through Gorilla Logic. -
It Development ManagerEnvironmental Stoneworks Mar 2011 - May 2016Cary, North Carolina, UsStarting as a jack of all trades on the Development side of a small IT department, I have stepped into the roles of Developer, Tester, DBA, Business Analyst, Trainer, High Level Support, and Manager. I've done everything from helping a user install adobe reader, to writing a custom mobile-ready web application, to managing the entire IT budget.I managed the priorities of up to three developers at a time in a semi agile environment. Together, we maintain the ERP system, Visual & Global Financials, the databases, a classic ASP Intranet document sharing site, and a multitude of new .net MVC4 web applications that center around the ERP's source data.JIM - created a phone enabled MVC web application that shows our remote users (mobile & laptop) all of the job information that was entered by our sales and office teams. It allows us to modify schedules to fit how those houses are going up. It allows us to attach any critical information to the job itself - photos, email confirmations, request for excess material, safety inspections, general comments. Our entire installation business was flipped on its head when this tool was rolled out, and now they cannot imagine managing their work without it.SLIM - created a phone enabled MVC web application to act as a CRM system, connected to Outlook calendars & contacts, and displaying customer statistics that were compiled from ERP data. We created reporting to help identify and move overstock inventory, as well as manage high level reports information. We also created an application centered around the AR & Finance team to help track notes and followup on collections. We created a suite of applications to help plan and follow through on Production and Manufacturing, and through shipping the product. We created a tool that split the time of doing a physical inventory in half.During my time I also helped lead a best practice team, helping to define and enforce standard policies across offices in 13 states. -
Web DeveloperKaplan Professional Jun 2010 - Mar 2011La Crosse, Wi, UsI split my time between maintaining a legacy ERP system, developing new web applications for internal users, and performing business analysis for our Real Estate project. As a part of a merger of divisions, the LaCrosse team inherited EBackOffice (called Platinum internally), an ERP system with all its surrounding mini-applications to run the Real Estate business. It handled the order entry, inventory, and accounting tasks related to Real Estate. I handled tasks ranging from DBA, Support, to new development. There were web applications hooked into the ERP system, as well as other integration tools, and I was in charge of them all.At the same time I was a member of the BDS (Business Development Systems) team which was in charge of developing internal applications for Products, Ordering, Completions and Certificates, and any other function that our internal teams were required to use. These applications were built on the .net stack with SQL Server 2008 as the back-end, C# as the language of choice, and both ASP.net and MVC2 / MVC3 as the frameworks. For the last 4 months, I was heavily involved in the Real Estate scrums to determine what the BDS involvement was in rolling out a new LMS (Learning Management System). We wanted a new platform for our online courses, and that platform would have to interact with the Ordering, Products, Courses, Completions, Certificates and other BDS areas of the business. For the 20 months I was there, my split was about 50% ERP system, 30% new development, and 20% Real Estate analysis. -
Software DeveloperFastenal Jun 2004 - Jun 2009Winona, Mn, UsDuring my 5 year tenure at Fastenal I worked on the IT teams for Inventory, AR, and was the lead of the AP team for the last 2.5 years. At the time I was there, Fastenal had 2000+ stores, and was a $2 billion company. The functional AP team was between 30-40 users, with a dev team of 3-6 people.Working on the three separate accounting development teams gave me a broad understanding of accounting as an IT person. We used PeopleSoft with an Oracle backend, and all of the built in PeopleTools, SQR, and other PS proprietary software to develop in.Besides being the team lead for Accounts Payable, my most notable project was rolling out an OCR software and process for all incoming paper AR and AP documents, including checks-scanning for AR and AP invoice scanning. We would speed-scan thousands of documents, have the OCR servers attempt to read everything on the documents, present to the user any questionable characters/words/phrases for correction, and then integrate directly into our back end ERP system. For the Scanning project, I wrote the AR processing module that correctly assigned 93% of check lines to the invoice they were meant to pay with no manual intervention. I also wrote the AP code that would upload the invoices for payment. During the entire project, I was the technical liaison with the AnyDoc team that implemented the OCR software itself. By the end of the project, we were seeing 30% reduction in man-hours per detail line processed as compared to our pre-OCR rates.
