About Marcela Bonafina Ph.D.
Prior to moving to the United States, Dr. Bonafina obtained a degree in Psychology from the University of Buenos Aires in 1993. In 2003, she graduated as a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with specialization in Neuropsychology from the Graduate Center of CUNY. Initially, consistent with her interests fostered in Argentina, Dr. Bonafina focused on the research of learning disabilities and attentional difficulties at Mount Sinai. As part of her predoctoral practicum, Dr. Bonafina received extensive training in adult neuropsychology, particularly focused on two conditions: epilepsy and dementia. To complete her internship, Dr. Bonafina was accepted at NYU-Bellevue Hospital, a highly competitive and prestigious program.Back in research, Dr. Bonafina took a position in Columbia University to study the neurobiology of suicide and collected data for her dissertation. After her graduation, she returned to NYU-Bellevue Hospital and completed a fellowship in neuropsychology.In 2004, Dr. Bonafina was appointed Assistant Director of the TBI Unit in Bellevue Hospital, evaluating over 750 traumatic brain injury patients. Later, she was asked to join the newly launched 9/11-WTC Mental Health Program, where she assessed and treated victims with PTSD and trauma-related disorders. Later, Dr. Bonafina took a position as staff neuropsychologist at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. She also worked for the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group and acted as a consultant for the Manhattan VA and federal agencies (TSA, DEA, National Coast Guard).Since very early in her career, Dr. Bonafina held several academic positions in distinguished institutions (University of Buenos Aires, Columbia University, New York University). She also participated as an executive officer in scientific societies, advisory boards, and organizing committees. Dr. Bonafina is a seasoned speaker well recognized for her passionate teaching and natural connection with the audiences.
