Dr. Brian Richard Joseph did graduate studies at the University of Toronto focusing on postwar re-industrialization in Japan and at Harvard on explanatory logics of Physics, Sociology, History and Law. He won Harvard's highest academic award, the Lehman Fellowship for his doctoral thesis on the Socio-economic Epidemiology of Infant Mortality. Following his studies at Harvard, he returned to his native Cape Breton to lead the design of Canada's first interdisciplinary, team-based, undergrad degree at Cape Breton University. That degree program, now widely imitated in Canada and abroad, won the national award for most "value added" to undergraduate education in MacLean's Magazine review of universities in Canada. Much of his research has centered on tackling concrete, local community development problems among the Aboriginal people of Atlantic Canada; language rights for minority students; and assuring school success for low income children. He began the CBC television series, "Community Report with Dr. Brian Joseph". In Central America he led a successful multinational initiative funded by Canada, Denmark, and Japan to build the first graduate faculty in Environmental Studies in Central America, where the new generation of Central America’s environmental scientists and policymakers are formed. A frequent adviser to governments, local and federal, he served as chief policy adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. He now lives and writes in Cape Breton on public policy, where he is leading the movement for a comprehensive social pediatrics program for Nova Scotia’s disadvantaged children. A survivor of childhood Polio, he became track and field champion of his hometown and MVP on his high school’s basketball team. In 1994 he was honoured by the National Canadian Church Press Association for his essay on “the dignity of work”. Among his many other honours, Dr. Joseph was featured on the front page of Barnes and Nobles MIGHTYWORDS web magazine with Coretta Scott King, widow of the late Martin Luther King Jr.
