The United States Energy Foundation annually awards roughly $160m in grants to nearly 700 organizations. The Foundation has over 100 employees and offices in three states (California, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C.).I lead the Foundation’s Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Grants Management departments. I work closely with my executive team colleagues to develop and execute our organizational strategy. Additionally, I collaborate with leaders across the organization to establish effective systems, processes, and policies that enable us to achieve our goals and objectives.

I led day-to-day operations at Hamilton Families, a high-growth non-profit that works to end family homelessness in the San Francisco Bay Area. I managed critical operational functions, finance, corporate compliance and governance, talent, data and research, and our nationally recognized family shelter and rehousing services programs annually, serving 800 of California's most vulnerable families. The organization operates with a $23M budget and 150+ employees.Accomplishments:Centralized administrative offices to strengthen collaboration, centralize services, substantially reduce travel burden on staff and participants, and efficiently use organizational resources. Standardized and modernized core IT systems to improve stability and reliability and implemented standard organizational training to ensure stronger user adoption.Revitalized performance feedback systems to ensure that 100% of staff received performance reviews to ensure staff at all levels received intentional feedback and support necessary to do their best work.

I led the only non-profit organization focused on supporting all Oakland public schools. Advise the mayor’s office, foundation executives, senior district leaders, and other stakeholders on strategies to leverage private partnerships to improve Oakland’s public school system. Develop and lead fund development strategies that raise an annual budget of $25M to support programs in early literacy, STEM, Arts, teacher professional development, and college and career readiness for 51,000 Oakland public school students. Provide leadership of new programs (i.e. Oakland school volunteers, Oakland Promise, A-Z Fund) that bring together public and private resources to strengthen teaching and accelerate learning across our community. Lead professional services division (project management, communications, fiscal sponsorship, and grant management) and ensure client satisfaction.Accomplishments:Increased organizational fund balance from $3M to $25M and rebuilt organizational reserve to 12+months of operating expenses.Increased earned revenue by 30% by implementing new systems and processes to strengthen financial management, improve human resource management for over 200 project employees, and facilitate stronger internal and client-facing communications.Launched a new organizational strategic plan that rebranded the organization, expanded our work to include civic engagement, and secured over $400,000 in multi-year investments to help deepen organizational capacity.Cultivated new partnerships in support for Oakland public schools with organizations such as Lyft, Intel, Salesforce.com, The Golden State Warriors, and the Clinton Global Initiative.Successfully launched Oakland School Volunteers, the largest community-wide effort to bring community members into high-need public schools to support educators. Expanded rapid response funding strategy by launching the A to Z fund to award over $200,000 annually to respond to urgent school needs.

Provide senior leadership to San Francisco Education Fund Programs: San Francisco Peer Resources, San Francisco School Volunteers, Teacher Professional Development, and Post-Secondary Success Program. Directly supervise four program managers and lead a program staff of twenty-seven (including four AmeriCorps VISTA members). Oversee programmatic budget $2.5 MM with a scope of service of 56,000 students throughout SFUSD.Accomplishments:Developed and refined process of program reporting that strengthened organizational communications about program impact with board, staff, funders, and partners.Led organizational business planning to strengthen alignment between program activities, intended program outcomes, and available funding.Refocused the relationship between program staff and development that aligned development efforts with programmatic needs and capacities.Strengthened internal communications practices to reduce information silos, streamline decision-making, strengthen knowledge sharing across the organization, and build staff ability to successfully engage in challenging conversations about race, class, culture, and language.Refocused the programmatic work of the organization on the highest need students and communities in San Francisco and restructured the programmatic resources maximize impact of organizational work.

Directed staff of fourteen certificated teachers and two after-school coordinators across sixteen middle and high schools who use in school and out of school strategies to train over 1,000 youth leaders who develop peer-helping relationships with over 13,000 students at fifteen middle and high schools.Accomplishments:Redesigned program evaluation for Peer Resources to improve alignment with leading youth development research and refined data collection and analysis to allow quicker use of data to improve practice at individual program sites.Developed and implemented annual program evaluation that aligned directly with key metrics in the California Healthy Kids Survey.Worked closely with district staff, elected officials, site principals, and community advisory committee to annually renew $1 MM in funds that support Peer Resources.Positioned program director as a permanent member of the senior leadership team for the Student and Family Services Department of SFUSD.

Strengthen public policy in support of California's Community College system by engaging broad array of K-12 educational equity advocacy community in Community College policy efforts.Accomplishments:Taught youth community advocates how to track, analyze, and respond to key state and federal legislation affecting community colleges.Provided technical assistance to California Community College System diversity and equity efforts focusing on remediation, college awareness and access, and campus equity.Wrote and edited quarterly meta-analysis of current research on an issue impacting community colleges (e.g. workforce development) and recommended policy options for local, regional, and statewide decision-makers.

Improve graduation rate of Black students by providing academic guidance and implementing programs that supported academic excellence and a thriving multicultural campus. Accomplishments:Strengthened support services to vulnerable populations by developing a data-informed/research based model of student attrition, and working with senior campus leadership to shift organizational policies and practices to improve service to students (Saint Mary's College of California).Reduced first-year probation by 10% and improved persistence of first-generation students by designing program to leverage peer and faculty mentoring in an innovative year-long transition program.Improved Year 1 to Year 2 persistence rate by 15% by redesigning campus EOPS program (High Potential program) to focus on helping students develop the reading, writing, planning and relationship building skills necessary to make a successful transition into college and alignment with co-curricular content.Designed and implemented campus-wide cultural celebrations for African and African-American cultural heritage.

Developed and implemented cutting-edge programmatic models which focused on preparing students for college success and excellence.Hired, trained and led 23 person program staff consisting of students, administrative staff and faculty.Managed the program budget and oversaw all programmatic components including courses, workshops and activities based upon evolving student needs.Leveraged research to redesign courses to strengthen their focus on helping students develop the reading, writing, and planning skills necessary to make a successful transition into college and alignment with co-curricular content.Designed and led collaborative processes resulting in a grant-funded ($30,000) plan to integrate math and science instruction into the 2006 program.

Developed, implemented, and evaluated social and educational programming focusing on needs of first year students in freshmen housing (1998-2002) as well as junior and senior students in senior student housing (2002-2006). Advised residents on personal, social, and educational issues and referred to appropriate campus resources when necessary.Supervised and train residential life staff of two student resident assistants.Conducted investigations of alleged violations of student code of conduct, presented reports, and consulted with senior staff, to adjudicate infractions and/or refer cases as appropriate.Served as member of disciplinary hearing board (DHB) to hear cases of serious violations of policy (esp. sexual assault/sexual harassment) or highly complex cases involving lengthy investigation which may result in suspension or expulsion.
