As a part of my PhD project, I have worked in a cross-disciplinary team of clinicians, data scientists and imaging experts. My PhD project focuses on characterization of the hepatic stem cell niche to understand the mechanisms of liver organogenesis, homeostasis and diseases, such as cancer. Due to the significance of the Wnt signalling pathway in human development and cancer onset, I have studied the expression patterns of both the Wnt signalling target proteins and the known stem cell proteins in human liver cancer tissue arrays, using a semi-automated quantitative IHC approach. I have also worked on an in vitro model of Wnt signalling activation on a human iPS cell line, iPSC-derived hepatocytes and a liver cancer cell line to explore the role of Wnt signalling in the maintenance and differentiation of stem cells and how it differs in cancer.
