Graduate Department of Business and Management & College of EducationWith the curriculum and instructional design emphasis I fostered as a doctoral student, I successfully applied the most proven, tested educational plans in order to facilitate a strong, comprehensive online and blended university learning experience. Working with students at the master’s and doctorate level gave me the opportunity to help guide future leaders in their professional development with intensive courses in organizational and educational leadership. I developed online courses with the student in mind, creating a rigorous yet accessible curriculum that would challenge and stimulate each learner. I found great fulfillment in aiding students along their individual paths as a dissertation committee member. Dissertation topics varied, but the common focus always remained reaching one’s optimal level of performance. Whether I served on committees and boards or devised and adapted lesson plans, this focus always defined my goals as an educator and leader.Key Contributions:-Leading first cohort of Samoan Doctor of Education students.-Supervised multiple students on dissertation committees.-Developed online national curriculum and courses.

This position afforded me one of my greatest challenges and subsequent successes. Following nine enlightening years of administrative leadership roles in diverse middle and high school environments, I accepted the responsibility of overseeing Kamaile’s middle and high schools with the knowledge that an immense task lay ahead. When I began my duties, the school ranked as one of Hawaii’s lowest-performing institutions. Having spent years mentoring young people as a counsellor, instructor, and administrator, I leveraged my knowledge and experiences to identify the community’s unique needs and to work collaboratively with dedicated teams in creating and implementing thorough, decisive plans of action that addressed intellectual, social, cultural, and emotional factors. With commitment and the combined efforts of a unified team, we were able to provide students with a safe, comfortable learning environment in which academic performance and self-esteem could subsequently flourish.Key Contributions:-After one year of proactive measures, the school earned “Most Improved Hawaiian Charter School of the Year.”-Led school through first WASC accreditation, securing six-year term (the longest term) on first attempt. -Trained entire staff on and implemented comprehensive project-based learning system.

I began a long and successful administrative career within Florida schools that faced many challenges, from lacking resources to lacking student achievement and motivation. For nearly ten years, I made tackling these challenges a top priority. Within this time, I am proud to have captained many successful initiatives that benefitted students and the schools as a whole. Key Contributions:-Key administrator for 1000-student advanced placement department, AICE department, and Special Education Department-Introduced programs increasing student achievement in reading, math, and student college entrance rates-Reduced school wide truancy rate to an all time low

Building on previous teaching experiences at Sacramento City College and within Sacramento’s Grant Joint Union High School District, I took on the challenge of helping students at the university level. The courses I taught for the Department of Psychological and Social Foundation, Educational Psychology very much utilized my early educational and professional experiences in counseling while giving me the opportunity to help others understand and implement the relationship-building approach that has long characterized my career and achievements. Key Contributions:-Created and launched bullying reduction program that produced significant positive results.-Within one year, substantially increased use of technology school-wide.-Sustained the school for 2 years at highest Florida rating for achievement, "A".

Key Contributions:-Secured $50.000 grant to install state-of-the-art sound system for theatre and music department-Administrated a speaking engagement for General Colin Powell to talk with a predominantly African American student body.

Key Contributions:-Launched radically successful reading initiative-Created and implemented racism and bullying intervention programs as well as self-esteem and social-emotional development programs.

Key Contributions:-Implemented a first-of-its-kind peer mediation program, which enabled students to resolve conflicts with peers in a more independent manner-Progressed school from system-wide grade of C to A grade within two years.

I spent much of my life in culturally and ethnically diverse urban areas where education is often strongly informed by personal and social experiences. Devoting the early part of my career to assisting youth in understanding and thriving in their complex worlds was an honor and one of the most formative learning experiences of my life. These years taught me cultural awareness and sensitivity, empathy, adaptability, mediation, innovation, and much more that cannot be summarized in a few words.These experiences motivated and inspired me in my many research efforts centralized on some of the many issues impacting our world (like poverty and homelessness) and in discovering the tools (such as character education, improved classroom environments, and personalized instruction) that can craft a better future for our young people and the societies they will one day lead.
