I worked in the Electronics and Computing team as a trainee patent attorney, training under a range of experienced patent attorneys and taking exams with the goal of becoming a fully qualified attorney.

The Patent Examination Board administers the examinations for qualification as a UK patent attorney. I mark the FD1 paper: one of the four final papers that candidates must pass in order to qualify as a Chartered Patent Attorney in the UK. The FD1 paper tests candidates on their competency in properly advising and acting for a client in any matter relating to the preparation, prosecution, exploitation and enforcement of patent rights in the UK and via both the European Patent Convention and PCT.

I utilised electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infra red (FTIR) spectroscopy, photoluminescence for the study of point defects in CVD diamond. This job also involved performing contract work for external companies such as Element Six Ltd and De Beers Technologies, UK. During this time I was also the custodian for the EPR and UV-Vis spectrometers which involved the management and upkeep of the machines along with organising and providing training.
