  • Department Of Widening Participation & Outreach, University Of Manchester
Summer School Instructor, Student Ambassador, Team Leader And Mentor
Department Of Widening Participation & Outreach, University Of Manchester 2002 - 2006
    Manchester, United Kingdom
The overarching focus of these roles was to widen opportunities for higher education. To that end, between 2002 and 2005, I visited various local secondary schools to engage with students who had no family history of university education, and I worked as part of a team delivering educational programmes at university open days. I also delivered talks to mature students at Bury College, where I studied myself as a mature student. During this period, I was also employed as team leader/mentor at four residential summer schools for year 11 students. This rewarding work involved helping teams of students to work together in carrying out an innovative and challenging group project. In 2006, I was employed as an Instructor, creating and delivering the summer school's English Literature strand, entitled 'Jane Austen and Issues of Class'. In addition to these residential schools, I also supervised teams of primary school students at several non-residential summer schools at the Manchester Museum, where the focus was the history and culture of the Egyptians.
