Friends for Life Program: designed to reduce fear & anxiety AT the Centre for Youth & Society, Dr.Connie Allsopp was a Postdoctoral researcher. Previously Allsopp taught 3 courses & supervised 10 graduating students teachers at the UVic.After 25 years in the public school system as a teacher, consultant and principal, her experience lead to an examination of principals’ perceived understandings of the relationships between their participation in leadership education and improvements in student outcomes as the result of their changes in knowledge, skills, dispositions, and leadership practices. In 2012 she completed her doctorate program at the University of Manitoba, and published a study available at http://hdl.handle.net/1993/5089.Dr. Allsopp joined CFYS to continue work on a school-based prevention program, FRIENDS for Life. In 2012, the BC Ministry and the Centre for Youth and Society team, Dr. Connie Allsopp, along with two research assistants Amy Green and Stephanie Poje, and the support of Dr. Anne Marshall developed an overall evaluation plan to determine the province-wide impact and long-term effects of the FRIENDS program. Although the benefits of the FRIENDS program had been shown in surveys, the questions remained: How widely used, throughout BC, was FRIENDS? Do teachers, parents and students see reduced fear and anxiety in students and classrooms that have taken the program? Do students know how to use their new skills to develop plans to manage their own life stressors? The aim of the FRIENDS program is to help children develop social intelligence.
