In 2017, Michele and I decided on taking early retirement from our senior roles at Harvard.Michele became a professional artist. My own “early retirement” weirdly developed into a cornucopia of freelance projects — each focused on helping organizations achieve their complex technical and strategic goals.My professional engagements remain under NDA. Built a world-class HPC and research computing organization from scratch. Aided in the design and development of a state-of-the-art green HPC center (MGHPCC) working with local and state government, leading private industries and our university partners at Boston University, Northeastern University, MIT, The University of Massachusetts, and Harvard. Secured grant funding and expanded research computing services across the university. Co-chair of the University IT Sustainability Committee. Jointly reported to the University CIO and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean of Science.

We pioneered ephemeral spot instances to lower the cost of HPC in the cloud. Cycle was acquired by Microsoft in 2017 and became a significant component of Azure HPC offerings.

Reported to the president and founder of the institute to develop algorithms and computational pipelines for mammalian genome sequence analysis. Headed up a team of HPC and systems experts to deliver advanced scientific computing and support at scale to the institute.

Initially the sole project lead for high performance computing for the Ensembl human genome annotation project. We ultimately constructed one of the largest HPC supercomputers in Europe to enable the rapid annotation of the human genome.

Worked with Dame Janet Maureen Thornton, DBE FRS FMedSci FRSC, and her team. We implemented and delivered multiple innovative bioinformatics algorithms and visualizations with the help of our hand rolled custom DEC Alpha Beowulf cluster. We built a novel all-by-all drug discovery platform for our customers.

Invented JPred & Jnet, and a neural network consensus secondary structure protein prediction service available for everyone, anywhere, alongside a few other EMBL-EBI web services, helped out a bit under Michele Clamp's direction with Jalview during my D. Phil. studies.

Developed and fabricated novel gallium incorporated zeolites confirmed by ab-initio computational and powder X-ray crystal analysis. First known use of a UNIX root shell to help scientists.
