Mapletree Publishing Company was a small book publisher operating out of the Denver area. Its focus was books about how to homeschool, but it also published some uplifting fiction and other titles that interested them. In January, 2009, the company was sold to WindRiver Publishing Company in Silverton, Idaho.

David practiced dentistry in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Starting in 1985 he became focused on cosmetic dentistry. In 1990, he became one of the first 40 accredited members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and was known for his internationally published research on teeth bleaching technique that first established that etching was not helpful for bleaching effectiveness.

While attending dental school, he worked during the summer as a radiology instructor, teaching x-ray technique mostly to dental hygiene students.

He was one of the first six LDS missionaries in Spain, and was in the group that opened Barcelona to missionary work and established the Barcelona Branch of the Church.

During his sophomore and early junior years at BYU, he served as Utah State Chairman of Youth for Nixon. He helped organize Youth for Nixon chapters at colleges across the state, and was successful in helping deliver the nomination for Nixon at the Republican state convention, and then of course in the general election. However, an interesting thing happened at the Utah state convention. Ronald Reagan was there as a guest speaker. A number of delegates the Nixon team thought were certain Nixon votes switched and voted for Reagan, they were so impressed with him, even though he wasn't a candidate at that time. Reagan did become a candidate four years later, in 1976.
