I am a Fulbright Scholar at Stanford University within the Department of Psychology, and I am a Senior Lecturer and Raine Robson Fellow at Curtin University. I am also a Director and Clinician (Clinical Psychologist) in private practice at the Psychology Centre of Western Australia, and am the National Chair of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.My primary research and practice interests are the understanding, assessment, and treatment of emotion-based mental disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, substance use, eating, and personality disorders). Much of my work focuses on the role that emotional awareness (alexithymia) and emotion regulation problems play in mental illness, and how this understanding can be harnessed to develop new assessment tools and treatment programs. I have published >90 journal articles and book chapters in this area, as well as a range of psychometric questionnaires that are now widely used around the world.Professional Development:I run training workshops for health professionals on the assessment and treatment of emotional problems. I also run workshops for businesses on optimising employee wellbeing and building emotional intelligence.
