Adjunct Associate Professor Dr David Sly is the Chief Operating Officer of Research at Ear Science. I am an auditory neuroscientist with over 20 years expertise in research and development in hearing diagnostics, therapeutics, hearables and electroacoustics. I am a confident and experienced presenter, mentor of over 50 staff, a skilled writer of funding applications and with advanced programming, database design, statistical analysis and data visualisation skills.My drive is to bring together hearing researchers from across Australia with the shared goal of improving treatments for those dealing with hearing loss. I serve as the institute's research ambassador, collaborating with industry leaders and government bodies, as well as philanthropic organisations, medical research advocacy groups, and universities across Australia.I led the development of Ear Science’s five-year research plan, which outlines the expansion from two research themes to five and in driving research governance, structure, and processes.I am also the lead on the new Hearing Devices and Implants research theme. I also supported the establishment of Ear Science Therapeutics Pty Ltd, the setup of the Ear Science Clinical Research Laboratory at the QEII Medical Centre, and the acquisition of vital research equipment.I supervise several PhD students at Swinburne University of Technology and students at other Universities around Australia.

Senior Research Fellow (Neuroscientist)University Of Melbourne 2005 - Jan 2016Melbourne, Victoria, AuMy research was in a surgical department examining drug treatments for noise-induced deafness, cochlear implants, the pathology of deafness and improved technologies for the detection of noise-induced hearing loss in military and other populations. The work was supported by the NHMRC, Defence Health Foundation, Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and the Garnett Passe and Rodney Williams Memorial Foundation and the Defence Science Institute.In the role I was responsible for managing a research team up to ten staff and students. I had many local and international collaborations with scientists, surgeons, engineers, audiologists, industry and the Australian Defence Force. I attracted nine research grants as a chief or principal investigator totalling over 1.5 million dollars and supervised 5 PhD students, 9 Masters, 1 Research Fellow, 4 research assistants, 20 student interns and 3 research assistants.In this role I also developed hearing diagnostics technology now in clinical use in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa. -

The company formation was based on my research in the Department of Otolaryngology, The University of Melbourne into creating next-generation headphone-based hearing diagnostics that including automated otoacoustic emissions detection. Kyle was my part-time employee at the University from November 2014 and together we decided to form Nuraloop to commercialise my technologies.We won two start-up prizes with Medtech's Got Talent and the Melbourne Accelerator Program.The company has since gone on to become Nura, producing the Nuraloop headphones.
