After graduating from the University of Pretoria, I lectured at my alma mater for 6 years and then spent the next 23 years in a research capacity, briefly at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in Johannesburg, and then at the Africa Institute of South Africa in Pretoria. Upon retirement, I initially involved myself in consultancy work and later in conference co-ordination activities. However, more recently, after spending a year as Nelson Mandela Chair Professor at the Centre for African Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India, during which time I reintroduced myself to editorial work (Africa Review and Diaspora Studies), my passion in this field was reignited (I edited the Journal of Contemporary African Studies for a decade during the 1980s).I was involved with Higher Education South Africa (HESA), now renamed Universities South Africa (USAf), serving as Editing Consultant for their in-house News@USAf, USAf Quarterly (a sector-wide, electronic publication aimed at the university system, with constituencies in 25 public, higher education institutions), and some ad hoc publications. I also edit post-graduate dissertations and doctoral theses, as more and more universities now require the posting of these research materials on the internet. Also, in March 2013, I was enlisted as an invigilator for tests and examinations at Varsity College, Pretoria; and in September 2014, I was appointed a Classifier at the Film and Publication Board (FPB) in Centurion, Pretoria. I have worked mainly in the fields of political science and international relations and built up a high level of expertise in African area studies over some 45 years, in the process developing excellent analytical, research, writing and editorial skills.
