About Devin Reid
I am a full stack Java developer and devops engineer who is well versed in all aspects of software design, implementation, and deployment. I have participated in both small research projects and development of larger multi-company integrated systems. I have a deep understanding of system operation in both Windows and Linux environments. I am capable of doing UI work, back end work such as server side programming and middleware interfaces, dealing with integration, deployment, devops, and working directly with customers.I have extensive experience integrating systems using a variety of middleware for data transport including JMS, AMQP, RMI, CORBA, EJB3, JbossESB, various web services frameworks and custom protocols using plain old sockets. I also have a solid background working with SQL databases including PostgreSQL and MySQL using JDBC, Hibernate and JPA.I have developed applications using a variety of application environments including Spring, JavaEE (JBoss, Tomcat, etc), and OSGi.I have experience with Git, Mercurial, SVN and CVS. I have worked with Ant, Gradle, and have expertise using Maven including writing custom Maven plugins. My devops experience involves administrating Jenkins servers and transitioning projects from manual build, test, and delivery processes to devops pipelines powered by Jenkins.I am well versed in a variety of provisioning and deployment strategies from more traditional hypervisor solutions such as ESX and HyperV to modern container solutions using Docker.I wear a lot of hats in the course of my everyday work between software developer, devops engineer, configuration management, and system administrator. Role listed
Field Solutions Engineer
Helping public sector customers modernize their network architecture by moving their network edge to the cloud. Cloudflare's platform allows unifying various on-prem, in cloud, multi-cloud, or hybrid applications behind a single, cloud-native, network edge solution for security, reliability and performance.
Lead Software Engineer
Lead software engineer on a project to develop new data management and middleware interfaces for a command and control product using reactive programming.Adding new and migrating existing projects to use Jenkins continuous integration for build, test and packaging.Provision, configure, and maintain operating environments for developers in both virtualized and containerized infrastructure.
Associate Principal Software Engineer
(L3 acquired my previous employer)Lead software engineer for a project that updated a legacy product to conform to new cybersecurity and information assurance standards as required by the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA).Performed network migrations for devops and other engineering infrastructure as part of post acquisition updates. Updated server operating systems, software and configuration to conform to new corporate security standards including ensuring compliance with various requirements under FIPS, NIST and DISA STIGs.Migrated operating environment for various engineering infrastructure services from bare-metal servers to a containerized environment using Docker.
Software Engineer
My role was principally a Java developer, but I also filled many secondary roles. I provided on-site support for integrators of our software products. I also administrated developer infrastructure including servers to host Mercurial repositories, issue tracking, artifact repositories, and continuous integration. I mentored other developers in the use of IDEs, version control systems, and build tools in both one-on-one and presentation settings. I provide advice and support for various teams in the company about build and configuration management.I also designed, developed and integrated UI and middleware components for a geographic data visualization project.I was the technical lead on a project to create a middleware application that would prioritize and transport data securely and reliably from various external applications across a disrupted, intermittent, low-bandwidth WAN. This application deployed in to a JBoss Enterprise Service Bus application environment. The protocol was implemented using Netty.I was a major contributor to development, integration and testing of command and control software for an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV). I also supported maritime demonstration of the system at US Navy exercises.
Software Engineer
My task was to develop a JavaEE web application as part of a multi-company system. As the only engineer on the project I developed the full stack which included an HTML+AJAX UI, Servlet back-end, JDBC and Apache Derby for data storage. SOAP based web services implemented with Apache Axis were used for integrating with other products in the system. The application was deployed in Apache Tomcat. The project was a multi-site install requiring network communication over a disrupted, intermittent, low-bandwidth WAN. To meet this requirement, I developed a robust application layer network protocol to allow for reliable data synchronization between sites.I setup and administrated a project test environment made up of Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers. I also setup and administrated a Subversion server for the project.I was responsible for all phases of the project from design and development to integration and delivery. I worked with subject matter experts to develop requirements and on-site with the customer to incorporate feedback. Development went through several planned spirals of integration, feedback, development, integration.
Intern
Digitized the records and workflow for an inventory tracking system used by the U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry. When I arrived as a summer intern, the Institute was still using paper records to keep track of its inventory. The director knew I was an undergraduate Computer Science student and asked if this process could be done in software. I spent the summer developing and testing a solution making frequent progress reports and soliciting feedback from future users. The program was basically a smart spreadsheet for data storage, that had Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) forms running on top of it. The Institute would use it to keep track of their inventory and generate reports crucial for their recordkeeping requirements. After a month of testing the software in parallel with their current processes, the Institute was very pleased and made the software the official record keeping method.Since the paper records had "gaps" a manual inventory had to conducted. I spent a couple of weeks in a dusty basement physically laying hands on thousands of items to establish the starting record for the new software. This was my first software product. Honestly If I could do this one over again I would not use VBA, but it is what I knew at the time and the bosses liked the idea of a smart spreadsheet. I was awarded a merit bonus for the success of the project.
