When Katie Godkin approached me with the opportunity to volunteer for The Batey Rehab project in the DR I thought it was too good to be true. I have always loved the idea of assisting those outside of our boarders but was hesitant as to what was truly beneficial to the community in the long run. So many non profits just give stuff. They go to Timbuktu and see how little people have and say here! Take this stuff! ...it's such an arrogant misconception we often attribute to living in a consumer economy; a belief that things will fix all situations...After months of collaboration with Katie Godkin's project I feel truly honored to be a part of something far more thoughtful and kind than donating a bag of toiletries. We are rebuilding homes that can withstand the hurricane seasons, teaching children and young adults trades such as sewing and jewelry making which will pay for their education, and creating a stronger community by reviving hope and happiness to oppressed Batey villages.Through my collaboration with BRP I aim to better the lives of the students through my experience of the business and creative eye. The heart designs I have created for the students replicate the students for As Jewelry Design Advisor and Director I look forward to teaching each student, taking whatever steps needed to sustain a strong foundation of jewelry design and paving the path for future generations.
