About Drew Atchison
I am an education policy researcher at the American Institutes for Research, focusing in areas of education finance, federal policy evaluation, and educational equity.I graduated with a doctorate in education policy from the George Washington University in 2017 specializing in quantitative research in the areas of education finance and equity in education with additional interests in school choice and accountability. Formerly, I served as a science teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School of the District of Columbia Public School system. As a teacher in DCPS I experienced many of the school reforms going on in DC, of which were a major new teacher evaluation system, a rapid expansion of charter schools, and a mayorally controlled school system. In a time that seems far removed from my current life, I was a football player who played professionally with the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins and in college at the College of William and Mary. In that capacity, I learned valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, self-discipline, and goal setting that continue to be valuable assets to me.
Listed skills include Teaching, Research, Spss, Education Policy, and 13 others.

Researcher

Research Associate
Adjunct Professor
Marketplace And Communications Researcher
I conducted qualitative and quantitative research for the Pilot-to-Purchase Study, which examined how six public school districts conducted pilots or tryouts of education technology products in order to inform future purchasing decisions. Tasks included working with a small group of researchers to conduct qualitative research, or coding, of interview transcripts using NVivo, quantitative analysis of student survey results, and writing a report to communicate the major findings of the report.
Graduate Research Assistant
As a graduate research assistant, I researched education finance and other topics in realm of education policy. I created and continually updated a longitudinal database composed of major financial variables in education finance and student demographic characteristics for each school district in the United States. I conducted analysis comparing spending in charter school districts to traditional public school districts using multilevel modeling and analyzed trends in educational expenditures over time. Other tasks included conducting literature searches on various topics including school finance and teacher motivation.
Education Pioneer Fellow
As an Education Pioneer Fellow at OSSE, I Evaluated the impact of grants and loans given to charter schools on educational and school outcomes. Findings from the evaluation indicate schools which are more active in obtaining grants from OSSE are less likely to close and experience greater enrollment growth. Certain types of grants also contribute to increased academic achievement. The methods used in the evaluation included multiple regression with fixed effects and hazard modeling.
Summer School Teacher
I taught biology, physics, and anatomy, working with students who had struggled with courses during the regular school year in order to help them understand and appreciate the subjects they took and keep them on track to graduate.
Science Teacher
Being a teacher in DCPS allowed me first-hand experience as a ground level implementer of urban education policies implemented in DCPS, such as the IMPACT teacher evaluation system, summer school, credit recovery, ninth grade academies, and more. I taught numerous science courses including AP Biology, all levels of general biology, chemistry, and physics and provided engaging, hands-on, inquiry driven lessons. Teaching was invaluable to improving my leadership skills as I was able to lead biology team meetings and collaborate with other teachers to improve teaching practice. I co-sponsored the NEMO oceanography club which was a partnership with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide students experiences with ocean science.
