About Drew Kalasky
As an MS Computer Science student at Columbia University, I specialize in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision, applying my skills and knowledge to prototype intelligent devices for various industries, especially healthcare. My passion for AI and biotechnology stems from my undergraduate education in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at UC Berkeley, where I was a Regents Scholar finalist and a previous Cancer Research Institute Youth Science Fellow. There, I fabricated new components for a nuclear magnetic resonance magnet, investigated drug sensitivities across three cancer types, and authenticated five proprietary oncological drug targets.Recently, I completed a four-month internship at Bionaut Labs, a pioneering company that develops nanobots for neurosurgeries. I developed diverse computer vision neural network architectures to improve segmentation accuracy and real-time tracking of the nanobots, and authored a comprehensive report to the FDA to approve the use of computer vision to navigate nanobots during neurosurgery. I also improved procedure segmentation by integrating adversarial networks into training protocols, and increased accuracy and versatility of procedure models by creating generative-adversarial networks that added synthetic x-ray medical images. I presented my findings to stakeholders at a company-wide meeting, receiving positive feedback and recognition.I am eager to continue learning and exploring the possibilities of AI and computer vision, and to apply them to solve real-world problems and improve lives. Outside of my work and studies, I enjoy riding my road bike, reading fiction and classic novels, and bodyboarding.

Machine Learning Engineer
Current
Computer Vision Engineer Intern
- Developed diverse computer vision neural network architectures to improve segmentation accuracy and real-time tracking of Bionaut’s nanobot during neurosurgeries.
- Authored and sent a comprehensive report to the FDA to approve the use of computer vision to navigate nanobots during neurosurgery. Presented findings to stakeholders at a company-wide meeting.
- Improved procedure segmentation by integrating adversarial networks into training protocols for procedure neural networks and developed a new feature that gives surgeons real-time feedback on a nanobot’s location.
- Increased accuracy and versatility of procedure models by creating Generative-Adversarial Networks that added synthetic x-ray medical images to a previous limited dataset.
- Cowrote safety standards for software team to follow when developing edge-case-handling for technological failures during surgery
- Investigated and identified optimal parameters that are now used in all Bionaut procedural vision models
Oncology Pdc Antibodies Intern
- Investigated drug sensitivities across three cancer types leveraging 1000+ cancer-diagnosed and healthy patients' biopsied tissue samples, concluding with a drug candidate CytomX put investors' money towards
- Authenticated five proprietary oncological drug targets, resulting in one target (CD166) being clinically tested in Phase 2 on patients with breast cancer to become a new CytomX anti-cancer medication
Undergraduate Researcher
- Fabricated new components for nuclear magnetic resonance magnet using computer modeling, MATLAB, 3D printing
- Persuaded physicists and chemists of engineering solutions combining each team's research: tailor new components to 40+ year old MRI, introducing liquid nitrogen systems, and doubling xenon lasers, all to increase.
