After graduating from Curtin University in 2003, I managed to land a role back in my hometown, Darwin, with international consultancy Sinclair Knight Merz. I was thrown straight in the deep end, and into their largest project at the time, the 1RAR relocation project at Robertson Barracks, designing hangars, administration buildings, residential quarters and simulator buildings, and just as importantly spending the entire construction phase undertaking structural inspections and learning all about how good, and not so good, design and detailing can have significant implications on buildability. SKM were fantastic at mentoring and allowing me the time to understand the fundamentals of structural design, and during my (almost) four years I was exposed to a huge range of projects whilst learning the intricacies of designing to cyclonic conditions in northern Australia.My next role took me to the Barossa Valley, to a D&C builder and fabricator experiencing exponential growth, a lot accredited to sharp and smart engineering. Ahrens Group threw much of my approach to structural design straight out the door, and I'm extremely grateful for it! I learnt how to push the limits and produce efficient designs that not only saved on materials but were simple to both fabricate and build.After Ahrens I did a quick stint at Costin Roe Consulting. I touched up on my concrete and residential design, but predominantly learnt how to investigate and report on structural defects, mainly for insurance companies and strata managers. With this start to my career I was full of confidence when starting Triaxial Consulting with two great men over in Sydney - Jeff Knox and Danny Cully. But my real learning has happened since! Starting a company, building a client base, marketing, HR and all the roles I've had since April 2012 have been hard, challenging and stressful - but brilliantly rewarding!
