I gram stain the specimens and determine the presence or absence of different bacteria, yeast, and white blood cells. If there are bacteria in certain specimens, such as in blood, I must notify the patient's healthcare team immediately so they can begin treating this potentially life-threatening condition.

Not only did I have to be good at multitasking to successfully take care of sometimes 10 patients at a time I also had to be adaptable to my environment. The different floors had different nurses which meant I had to learn on the fly what they expected of me and which order took precedent when two nurses ask me to complete two different tasks.
