About Carlos Drews
Carlos Drews is a Nature Conservation Leader. After occupying the role of Executive Director of the Jane Goodall Institute for two years, he is currently the Executive Vice President for Conservation at Ocean Wise, based in Vancouver. Prior to that, he was the director of WWF´s global species conservation work. He is an accomplished, passionate and visionary environmental leader and people manager in both, academia and the non-profit sector. His policy and communications outreach includes head of state/government level conferences, royal families, presidents, numerous ministers, media and donors worldwide. Carlos is a remarkable speaker, who was awarded recently the LiberPress International Award 2015. A Colombian native, Carlos has a Ph.D. in zoology from Cambridge University and carried out research in Africa and Latin America, including a study that earned him the John Napier Medal of the Primate Society of Great Britain. Carlos acted as academic staff and interim director of the Institute for Wildlife Conservation and Management in Costa Rica. He co-authored Costa Rica´s annual report on human sustainable development and its climate change strategy. In 2003, he joined WWF to head its marine and species work in Latin America until 2009, then moved to Switzerland for his global assignment with WWF, and in 2017 accepted the Executive Director position at the Jane Goodall Institute in the US. He leads the global ocean conservation program at Ocean Wise since November 2019.
