The Aged Care Industry IT Council (ACIITC) was formed by the two industry Peak bodies Leading Age Services Australia (LASA) and Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA) in 2007 with the express intent of providing the industry with a vehicle to consider and debate IT related opportunities and to disseminate the lessons learned from that process to the wider aged care industry.The primary objective of ACIITC is to improve the quality of care for older Australians through supporting and educating aged care service providers about the efficiencies and service improvement capabilities that well managed IT system deployments can achieve.

Working with the students and staff of THRIL in conjunction with the Australasian Telehealth Society and other industry groups I am working to drive the adoption of telehealth as part of the healthcare available to all Australians.There is a need for proper evaluation of new technologies in healthcare, and their proper adoption. This goes beyond just introducing new technologies. Rather it requires a deep understanding of the healthcare system, the technology available, and the policies and reimbursement models in place.Healthcare providers have an obligation to ensure their patients receive the highest possible care in the most efficient way. They need to take a proactive role in ensuring they can do this. Policy driven by good research such as that from THRIL is very important in making this a reality.

After a short break I am back at Intel, one of the world's most innovative companies, driving health and life sciences in Australia and New Zealand.In my new role I am working with the healthcare sector to transform itself with the innovative use of information technology. The goal is to improve patient outcomes as well as improve efficiency and effectiveness.In the brave new world of life sciences I am exploring how the new world of "omics" intersects with healthcare and information technology to enable us to provide personalized solutions to patients, as well as improve population health.

After 5 great years at Intel's Digital Health Group I am very excited to be taking on a new role as Australian General Manager for the new Intel GE joint venture Care Innovations.My role encompasses much of what I have been doing at Intel over the last 5 years, but is more focussed on providing solutions to enable people to live independently wherever they are and at whatever stage of life they are in.Our goal is to provide technology based solutions to enable higher quality care for individuals in their own homes.I plan to use my clinical expertise from 30 years in the healthcare sector to ensure we provide clinically relevant solutions that enhance the quality of life of individuals, their families and their friends.It is a very exciting time to be involved in healthcare, reform is just around the corner and the focus has shifted from solutions for providers to solutions for those who need healthcare services. In my day we called them patients, but today they are individuals who all deserve the best we can do.
