As a researcher, I strive to create evidence-based heat mitigation strategies to protect individuals, workers, and populations against the global health threat emerging from a warming planet. I believe in collaborative research initiatives that unite academic researchers, knowledge users, and technology experts from around the world, including established partnerships and engagement of academia, government, civil society organizations, and industries. Findings from the Human and Environmental Physiology Research Unit (HEPRU) assist with the translation of scientific evidence to environmental, climate, and health policies as well as the development and dissemination of equitable heat-mitigation guidance (e.g., policies, directives, standards, and guidelines) to protect the health of the most vulnerable individuals. This work extends to helping redefine new standards for physical activity and work in hot environments, which includes exposure limits, hydration requirements, clothing systems, cooling interventions, heat monitoring, and management protocols.
