I work with people who have emotional disorders, addictions or both (called dual-diagnosed or co-occurring disorders). I use science-based secular methods including Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) as alternatives to, or to supplement, the usual faith-based 12-Step approaches. I serve as a volunteer advisor to SMART Recovery (Self-Management And Recovery Training) and I authored The SMART Recovery Handbook (2nd Ed, 2004). I also support Moderation Management and other secular and science-based self-empowering mutual-support groups. Show less
