About Ian Lewis
In my current role I am responsible for the strategic development, coordination and implementation activities of the Transformative Technologies sector within the Research Strategy and Programmes (RSP) domain of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).The Transformative Technologies (TT) sector team manages BBSRC’s strategic development and investments that support developments in tools, technologies and approaches that enable researchers to push the boundaries of scientific discovery and increase the impact of their research.Prior to this I was Head of Strategy and Initiatives at the National Cancer Research institute (NCRI), a member of the Senior Management Team and responsible for implementing the NCRI’s strategy and overseeing the strategic initiatives that enable the NCRI to accelerate cancer research. This includes engagement with the NCRI Partner organisations and other key stakeholders, identifying gaps and opportunities in cancer research and developing collaborations or programmes of work to address them.I originally joined the NCRI as the Head of Clinical Research Groups (Maternity Cover) in December 2016. In this role I provided leadership and strategic input into the activities of the NCRI’s Clinical Research Groups (CRGs), a central component of the cancer research framework in the UK which develops and maintains a balanced portfolio of high-quality clinical cancer research.Prior to joining the NCRI I worked at Tenovus Cancer Care as the Director of Research and Policy with responsibility for the development and implementation of the research strategy and activities related to health promotion and cancer risk reduction. I was also responsible for the development of the charity’s evidence-based policies, campaigns and the evaluation of services.

Head Of Strategy And Initiatives
Responsible for implementing the NCRI’s strategy and overseeing the strategic initiatives that enable the NCRI to accelerate cancer research. This includes:• Engagement with the NCRI Partner organisations and other key stakeholders• Identifying gaps and opportunities in cancer research and developing collaborations or programmes of work to address them• Managing existing NCRI initiatives such as the Cellular Molecular Pathology (CM-Path) initiative and the Living With and Beyond Cancer Priority Setting Partnership• Managing the Cancer Research Database which collates the research funding data for all of the NCRI partner organisationsAs a member of the Senior Management Team I shared responsibility for setting and monitoring budgets, supporting colleagues across all teams to achieve our collective objectives and work closely with the Trustee Board to ensure robust governance.

I provided leadership and strategic input into the activities of the NCRI’s Clinical Research Groups (CRGs), a central component of the cancer research framework in the UK which develops and maintains a balanced portfolio of high quality clinical cancer research.My team was responsible for delivery of all of the activities of the NCRI CRGs, currently including Clinical Studies Groups (CSGs), the Clinical and Translational Radiotherapy Research (CTRad) Working Group and the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) Group. I was also responsible for oversight of all patient involvement in NCRI activities via the NCRI Consumer Forum.
