They come from ASML, Volvo trucks, Philips Medical, Pallas nuclear reactor,Dutch Railways (NS), Amsterdam metro system, Thales, European Central Bank (ECB), etc. Indeed, a wide variety of domains. Apart from giving them a thorough review they also serve as inspiration for “Requirements Assistant”. This tool is the home of many rules, that find errors in specifications. Over the past 20 years it is a growing body of knowledge aimed to find potential trouble in development specifications. These rules focus on completeness, consistency, vagueness, testability, and all the other desirable attributes of a specification. And , this analysis also works for a set of specifications.A recent example: I received a development specification of about 50 pages for a hi-tech product. The document was reviewed by 60 people, some of them domain experts and system engineers. Not just once, but the specification was reviewed three times, then approved, and put under change control.Then a review with Requirements Assistant was executed, and it found 30 major issues.
