Was a substitute teacher in Merced County. Learned the value of clear communication both with teachers and students (no one likes a confusing lesson plan/sub note!).Practice managing large groups of rowdy teens which honestly isn’t much different from trying to work in group projects in college. I need to be patient, clear, firm, and, at times, understanding.Implement different types of instruction based on learning style, disability, and language barriers.

Tutor students of all ages in all subjects from Algebra to English Literature to CSET. There is no lesson planning, so on the spot explanations with minimal time to look up subject material is common. As a result, effective verbal communication is key, especially since everything is real-time and face-to-face. Occasionally, I will tutor more than one person at a time on different subjects, so I must also be able to adapt quickly and without pause as they are paying for every minute they spend there.I also need to be able to communicate with students of different ages and education levels. For example, tutoring a 2nd grader on writing requires a vastly different set of skills than giving advice to a middle aged person preparing to take their CSET.

Los Banos Junior High School

Prepared and carried out lesson plans for both 8th grade science classes and a LEGO Robotics class. Delivered stand-up presentations, budgeted and gathered appropriate materials for lab experiments, was responsible for safely carrying out said lab experiments, and endeavored to create an environment that was both results driven but also safe and open for discussion and questions. I was also required to attend professional development events and meetings with my department.

Through stand-up presentations and physical demonstrations, BEAT endeavored to bring more comprehensive biology, engineering, agriculture, and technology exposure to schools in the Central Valley. We traveled to different locations such as the Boys and Girls Club in Merced, middle schools in the county, and UC Merced to hold presentations and teach students about subjects ranging from Python programming and how the heart works to hydroponics and how hydraulics systems work.

Worked with two teachers in Merced County to create lesson plans that aligned their Common Core curriculum with engineering principles and how these principles apply in the real world. We researched different types of experiments appropriate for the classroom and created presentations that I delivered in front of their classrooms a couple times a week. I also taught a python programming class twice a week to one of the teacher's 6th grade class.
