Served as primary investigator (researcher) for the Soldier-Centered Army Learning Environment (SCALE) project at the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL). The Army struggled with the slow pace of learning content development (up to 2 years) which deprived warfighters of essential, potentially life-saving, information. As a research-ethics certified researcher, authorized to conduct human and data research in the enterprise, I designed and conducted experiments exploring the efficacy of crowd-sourcing and crowd-vetting as a means of creating and maintaining learning content. Providing direction to software developers, we created the Social Media Framework (SMF) to enable all warfighters to contribute and validate content. We determined that individual warfighters at all levels of the service can contribute and validate useful information that can be used to quickly train other service members. We also created a means for controversial content to be flagged to subject matter experts for authoritative answers and directives. I presented our results at the world’s largest education conference – the Interservice and Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in December 2014. In our second year, we integrated with an Army artificial intelligence system, the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT). We presented our second year results at the 17th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED 2015).
