About Dr. James R. Churilla - Facsm
Dr. Churilla is a Professor and Graduate Program Director of the Kinesiology and Lifestyle Medicine Program in the Brooks College of Health at the University of North Florida. He currently teaches Exercise Physiology and Laboratory Techniques, Cardiovascular Exercise Physiology, Medical Exercise Physiology, Physical Activity Epidemiology and Evidence Review, and Research Methods in Physical Activity. Dr. Churilla also teaches Epidemiology for Advanced Practice Nursing in the Doctor of Nurse Practitioner Program. Dr. Churilla's research agenda includes examining the association(s) between various modes and intensities of physical activity and metabolic health, particularly the aggregation of cardiovascular risk factors known as metabolic syndrome. Current studies include Measured and Estimated Pulse Wave Velocity in Reduced and Preserved Ejection Fraction Heart Failure; Trends in Hyperinsulinemia in U.S. Adults without Diabetes; Sedentary Behavior and Prescription Drug Use in U.S. Adults; Combined Effects of Cognitive Function and Inflammation on Mortality in U.S. Adults; and Relationship Between Depression and BMI Changes Among U.S. Adults. Dr. Churilla is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and holds several certifications at various levels within the college. CurrentThe Master of Science in Health (MSH) in Kinesiology and Lifestyle Medicine (KALM) is a life sciences degree that integrates an evidenced-based curriculum in an applied research environment. Students pursuing the MSH in KALM are required to take 11 core courses in the areas of exercise physiology, physical activity epidemiology, muscle physiology and strength, research methods, and biostatistics for a total of 33 credit hours. The remaining credits will be will be satisfied with a six credit internship/project or thesis option. Students must declare a thesis or non-thesis option upon acceptance in to the program.
