Dr Jamie Craggs is one of the co founders of the Coral Spawning Lab.In 2012 he pioneered ex situ coral sexual reproductive research. The long term aim of this was to support a deeper understanding of climate impacts on reef resilience and the ability of corals to reproduce under these changing environmental conditions.Coral Spawning Lab utilises the latest microprocessor technologies in an ex situ environment, to precisely replicate the environmental cues that triggering coral reproduction in the wild. These include seasonal temperature, sunlight and lunar cycles. In 2013 this resulted in the worlds first predictable broadcast coral spawning, in a completely close system.Since this ground breaking achievement the Coral Spawning Lab have continued to explore the possibilities of ex situ spawning events, leading in the innovation of novel system designs that maximise coral spawning outputs and develop new ways of increase productivity for reef research and restoration.
