About Jamie Ward

“I haven't failed, I have only found 10,000 ways it doesn't work.”While this quote may be a bit cheesy, I can strongly relate to its frustration and the value of stubborn tenacity. I am a research fellow in seismology looking to switch careers to data science where I can bring skills I have acquired in data analysis, automation, problem-solving and communication to the new role.A project which showcases the technical skills I possess and the value I bring to the new role involved creating software in Python to automatically process groups of seismic data. The approach used bootstrap resampling, traditional seismic processing, and cluster analysis. This approach is valuable because it removes subjectivity and allows for uncertainties to be estimated. The software was been version-controlled with Git and is open source on GitHub. Using this method, I automatically analysed a large (terabytes+) dataset of seismic observations which had yet to be made on such a scale. Communication is vital to my work. I have given many presentations to experts and non-experts alike in settings such as international conferences, invited seminars and outreach in pubs. In terms of written communication, I have published manuscripts in high-impact journals, written annual review reports and my thesis for which I came runner-up for the geophysics thesis of the year 2022. I have led and mentored projects from dissertations to hackathons. In the hackathon, the group was made up of software engineers and data scientists and we used machine learning to estimate the earthquake's location within kilometres, an improvement on recent algorithms. During this, I had to strike a balance between motivation and providing constructive criticism and feedback. Currently, I manage my development. I have a fascination with data science techniques and automating tasks. I taught myself about machine learning which I have since applied in several personal projects including:- image classification of SAR images of Venus- ozone level forecasting- sentiment analysis of tweets about climate change- automatically sorting seismograms Continuing my self-driven development, I have completed a data science track and data science professional track course on Datacamp to fill in the gaps in my knowledge about best practice, statistics and SQL. I am looking to continue to improve my knowledge of Bayesian statistics and R.If you want to get in touch, feel free to connect on LinkedIn or via email at jamie.a.ward@hotmail.co.uk.

My work involved both handling and processing large datasets of time series data to understand the inner workings of the Earth and using numerical modelling to test hypothetical Earth models. My interests involved analysing the transitions from the Earth's rocky interior to regions of high or low temperature or chemical differences. My interests involved analysing the transitions from the Earth's rocky interior to regions of high or low temperature or chemical differences. Constraining these give insight into the Earth's history and also their effect on the surface. I also predict the expected seismic observations from a given flow field of the Earth's connecting mantle. With this comparison, Earth models created with different initial states can be scrutinised. I am interested in expanding my work to larger and larger scales which involve automating the analysis as much as possible while minimising loss of information or complexity. Show less

My work focuses on using and developing array seismology techniques to analyse structures within the Earth. Specifically, I use Python codes to measure the direction and speed of waves generated by earthquakes to infer what structures they have sampled. This has been applied to data recorded in southern Africa. I am currently working on a method to automate this process so regional or global datasets can be used. This involves a combination of bootstrapping methodology combined with clustering… Show more My work focuses on using and developing array seismology techniques to analyse structures within the Earth. The goal of the placement was to model fault propagation between two thin sections of rock. This involved conducting a literature review on rock mechanics, then independently researching and applying digitising and stitching software. The placement highlighted the challenges of independent research and alternative methods should be used for modelling.
