The Battery Innovation Center (BIC) is a collaborative initiative designed to incorporate leadership from renowned universities, government agencies, and commercial enterprises to focus on the rapid development, testing, and commercialization of safe, reliable, and lightweight energy storage systems for defense and commercial customers. I joined the BIC when it became operational and was part of the small original team that grew it into a stable, high impact operation.My role at the BIC included:-Director of research and development, P&L responsibility, designing experimental plans, foreseeing development challenges, and establishing sensible milestones along the path to commercialization-Director of Training & Outreach, including instructor and content creator for BIC's energy storage educational series-PI/Co-PI on BIC and BIC-network R&D grants-Consultant-Electrode formulation optimization to accommodate novel active materials, conductive additives, or utilize varying binder:solvent systems, and understanding process-structure-performance relationships-Systems engineering at the cell level-Establishment of best practices when utilizing new technologies in terms of process simplification for industrial application, reproducibility, quality control, and safety-Collaboration, technical service, grant application writing, and consultation for customers, members, and partners of the BIC-Oversee scientists, engineers, technicians, interns, and assist visiting graduate students in conducting research
