I have conducted research in the fields of health psychology, behavioral medicine, and integrative medicine since 1997. I am especially interested in the effects of stress on mental and physical health, and the potential health benefits of mindfulness meditation to reduce stress. My research on mindfulness, stress, and health has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and several other granting agencies.As Director of the Mindfulness, Stress & Health Lab, I enjoy mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in research. Our studies have been published in many scientific journals, including Brain, Behavior, and Immunity; the Journal of Health Psychology; the Journal of Behavioral Medicine; the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine; and Current Opinion in Psychology. I am currently collaborating with physicians, basic scientists, and biostatisticians to better understand how mindfulness meditation can benefit mental & physical health by changing the brain, behavior, the immune system, and gene expression.As a Licensed Psychologist and Health Services Provider, I also specialize in integrating mindfulness with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help patients treat and prevent stress-related health problems - from high blood pressure, chronic pain, and obesity, to depression, anxiety and insomnia. I also have experience applying a number of different mind-body skills, including meditation, guided imagery, relaxation, and hypnosis, to help people prepare for and recovery from surgery.I have a PhD in Clinical Health Psychology (University of Miami, 2006) and a Masters degree in Biomedical Chemistry (Thomas Jefferson University, 2001).I am currently on faculty at Rowan University, with affiliations at both Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) and Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (RowanSOM), where I focus on integrating mindfulness in medicine.
