The investigation used a wide range of laboratory skills, method development, and required strong team work to successfully bring together… Show more I worked as part of a collaborative team researching the potential anti-cancer effects of metformin, a widely used antihyperglycaemic drug used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The project aimed to elucidate the mechanism of action of metformin on lipid pathways in breast cancer cell using cell models as well as human tissue as part of a clinical trial. The investigation used a wide range of laboratory skills, method development, and required strong team work to successfully bring together the two areas of expertise.My role in the project included effectively liaising with team members, experimental design, data handling and manipulation, and oral and written presentations. I also trained staff in new techniques and chaired a monthly journal club. In addition to orally presenting the findings of the study to peers in-house and at other institutions, I also contributed to writing manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals. Show less -

I used a range of laboratory techniques to analyse samples from human volunteers, such as isolation of lipoproteins using density gradients and ultracentrifugation, extraction and isolation of lipids from plasma and tissue, fattyacid analysis using gas chromatography, measurement of metabolites using enzyme assays via an automated biochemical analyser, RIAs, and ELISAs. Other responsibilities included data handling and manipulation, general maintenance of the laboratory, staff training and upkeep of training files, managing quality controls for various techniques, and contributed to several publications in peer-reviewed journals. I was also a laboratory safety officer, laboratory first aid officer, organised a fortnightly journal club and tutorial session, and co-supervised a final year undergraduate project. Show less -
