Teaching healthcare students to enact #compassionatecare and #empathy through understanding writing and stories. As a health humanities interdisciplinarian, I have a job with two core responsibilities. First, I chair the Health Care Administration and Public Health (HCAPH) department, which includes three programs: Health Care Admin., Health Humanities, and Public Health. Second, I’m the Director (and core faculty) in our recently established Health Humanities program, which is funded by a generous grant from the NationalEndowment for the Humanities. The major is for non-clinical or clinical students who are interested in applying humanities knowledge and skills to foster compassionate, innovative, and resilient professionals in the health-related fields, from medical illustration and recreational therapy, to nursing, doctoring, and surgery. These students will learn to see the “bigger picture” of a person’s health and healthcare, driving them to create empathic, equitable, creative solutions to healthcare problems.I am a skilled and passionate researcher and multi-genre writer. My years of interdisciplinary work across health, healthcare, and the humanities have honed my ability to synthesize dense scientific information into manageable concepts for wider audiences. While I am a life-long learner and get get excited learning about anything new, I also have a few key areas of expertise: women’s health, health equity/health disparity, anatomy and physiology, medical history, informed consent, patient-centered care, death and dying, and meaningful storytelling.
