About Jessica Maddox
I'm currently an assistant professor of digital media technology in the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama. In my tenure-track role at Research 1 university, I oversee complex and collaborative research projects in human-computer interaction through ethnography, focus groups, interviews, diary studies, contextual inquiry, and survey design.My research approaches social media platforms as services for users, and I'm passionate about learning how people navigate digital environments. By analyzing complex data, we can craft stories that help us better understand users' experiences of digital products and services. As a critical researcher, I am attuned not only to how web infrastructure impacts experiences, but how demographics, safety, ethics, inclusion, and accessibility are immense parts of how users work with platforms.I am the author of “The Internet is for Cats: How Animal Images Shape our Digital Lives” (Rutgers University Press, 2023), a qualitative research exploration that examines how the technical architectures of platforms lend themselves to the internet’s most popular cultural practice.I have extensive experience in mentoring and leading junior researchers on project teams. Teaching others and helping set them up for success in their own careers is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.Key areas: Social media platforms, Web 3.0, algorithms, creators. influencers, human-computer interaction, consumer research, product research, data science, user experience, communications, public speaking, storytelling, ethics.
