Of particular interest are Circulating Tumour Cells, or 'CTCs,' as they are known. These are cancer cells that have detached from a primary tumour, adopted genetic mutations that have allowed them to migrate to and survive in the blood stream. The more aggressive CTCs can even resist therapy aimed at treating the primary cancer. With a trigger, these cells may go and disseminate in a distant organ and grow to form a secondary tumour, called metastasis. It is metastases, rather than the primary tumour, that is usually responsible for a fatal outcome. This is why CTCs are extremely important to track.As Medical Director to Genostics, I have partnered with Maintrac (Germany) to bring CTC testing to patients around the world.
