Dr. Joan Fleischman has been an advocate for integrating abortion care into primary care medicine for over 25 years. Inspired by research in India, Malaysia, and Bangladesh before medical school, she went on to get her M.D. at Harvard Medical School and M.P.A at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. She became an abortion provider in 1995, during her Family Medicine residency at Montefiore, in the Bronx. She was struck by the fact that abortions were only offered in separate clinic settings and wondered why abortion wasn’t part of mainstream medical care.As a faculty member at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, she initiated a grant-funded program to train family doctors in early abortion methods, called the Early Options Training and Research Center. In 2000, this was the first abortion training program for family doctors. She then went on to set up Early Options, a small business model of primary care based early abortion services. Today, Dr. Fleischman provides abortion care at her practice, while aiding the telehealth-based abortion pill efforts in the United States after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. She co-founded the MYA Network, linking patients directly to primary care clinicians. Dr. Fleischman continues to fiercely advocate for integrated abortion services and combatting misinformation about this medical care.
