I am Associate Dean, Engagement, and Professor in Entrepreneurship at Durham University Business School, and Director (Business MM Engagement) of Durham University's Durham Energy Institute ("DEI"). I sit on the University's COP Steering group and am a member of the Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy.Winner of the Durham University Enhancing Learning and Teaching: Digital and Online Learning Award 2019-20, and Durhamβs Academic Tutor of the Year 2024, I am trustee and Director of social enterprise, Acumen Community Buildings; I have been Regional Chair for the Chartered Institute of Marketing and Regional Vice-Chair for the Institute of Directors' North East and Yorkshire branch. My professional experience runs from my Oxford University law degree in 1985 and encompasses not only law (mostly company and contract, practiced in South Africa 1985 - 1987) but also science, creativity and technology. These interests are underpinned by significant and ongoing interest in new developments in media, marketing and advertising; technology and innovation. My entrepreneurial spirit is underpinned by a deep and broad range of regional, national and international corporate and public sector contacts which I build into my day to day activities in HE and external relations. My MBA dissertation focused on the impact of broadband connectivity on the TV industry, and my PhD took this one step further, looking into the impact of technology on the 21st Century music industry's business models and value chains. My current research and teaching interests encompass Problem Based Learning, innovation, entrepreneurship, big data, ageing and health and the digital/creative industries. I have a particular emphasis on supporting the 'women in STEM' agenda in a variety of ways. I work closely with the IEC team and undertake a wide variety of public and media activities on behalf of the Business School, the Dept of Engineering and Durham Energy Institute. I was admitted to the Northern Power Women Power List in 2020, sit on the NPW Power List, and have been nominated as Mentor of the Year and Agent of Change in the NPW Awards (held March 2023). I am a regular international public speaker on wellbeing, mental health, supporting equality, diversity and inclusion, women in the workplace and related issues. Director Of External RelationsNewcastle University Business School Sep 2011 - Aug 2015Newcastle Upon Tyne, United KingdomThe School vision was to be an internationally recognised business school by being regionally rooted, nationally influential and globally respected. The School mission was that, through building excellence in teaching, research and engagement activity, it will provide all stakeholders with new, global perspectives and the inspiration to contribute to the responsible and ethical shaping of society. The engagement mission, as a result, is to undertake excellent engagement which underpins the Schoolβs mission through informing and supporting the strategies of both research, and of teaching, learning and the student experienceβ.Engagement, even excellent engagement, means nothing in isolation. Engagement needs to inform research: research needs to inform engagement. Equally engagement needs to inform the teaching, learning and student experience agenda, and teaching, learning and student experience should inform engagement. Both of these virtuous circles of activity can be underpinned and strengthened by the executive education, communications and internationalisation strategies. This means that there will by definition be areas where key activity areas cross paths and it was Joanna's responsibility to curate these relationships to the best advantage of students, researchers, business and the University.Joanna ran the International Advisory Board for the School, sat on numerous University-evel committees, and was also a panel member for the Newcastle Cultural Fund. Her external activities included board/membership positions on the NECC's International Trade Committee, and it's support for female businesspeople, Women on Board. She participated during this time, and still does, in IoD activities and committees and for 7 years was Regional Director of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. -
