I founded and supported The Kelp Rescue Initiative, which aims to restore BC’s kelp forests.

I provided guidance and expert advice on cannabis science, innovation pathways, intellectual property and business strategy.

I led the science portfolio at Aurora Cannabis including plant science, medical affairs and executive oversight of Anandia.

The CCIC is a federally registered Canadian nonprofit organization of basic and clinical researchers and health care professionals established to promote evidence-based research and education concerning the endocannabinoid system and therapeutic applications of endocannabinoid and cannabinoid agents.

I co-founded (with John Coleman) and led a world leading cannabis science company, which was acquired by Aurora Cannabis in August 2018.

At NRC, my lab used biochemistry and genomics to study metabolism in medicinal plants. The main projects were focused on the biosynthetic pathways leading to cannabinoids in cannabis and the prenylated polyketides (eg xanthohumol) in hop (Humulus lupulus). The genes and enzymes identified through this work are being used for metabolic engineering of plants and microorganisms ("synthetic biology").

I worked as a visiting scientist studying structural biology of type III polyketide synthases. The laboratory of Joe Noel hosted this sabbatical.

I supervised a lab working on polyketide metabolism in medicinal plants, including Cannabis saliva (marijuana) and Humulus lupus (hop), as part of the Department of Natural Product Biochemistry (Toni Kitchen Department Chair).

I studied enzymes of alkaloid biosynthesis in the lab of Toni Kutchan. The project attempted to identify the enzyme S-tetrahydroprotoberberine oxidase (STOX) using a combination of biochemical assays and sequence homology.
