About Joy Banerjee, Ph.D.
I am interested in research and development of functional materials including application development, utilizing my expertise in materials science, team managerial skills, effective communication capabilities, and the ability to deconstruct complex problems to find solutions. My doctoral dissertation in Materials Science and Engineering department was focused on the surface and interfacial chemistry of organic materials on commercial glasses with an emphasis on fiberglass composites and functionalized glass surfaces. During my doctoral tenure, I was able to gather extensive experience with various materials characterization techniques including X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), IR spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Optical Profilometry (OP), goniometry and first-principles molecular modeling.I have experience in thin film deposition on glasses and oxide surfaces with the intent of creating environmental barriers and improving the strength of commercial glass surfaces. The hybrid organic-inorganic coatings were applied by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) with film qualification by ellipsometry, white light interferometry, Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), AFM, OP, XPS and IR spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of the films were tested with nanoindentation, and the strength of the composite material was characterized by Hertzian Indentation. As a postdoctoral scholar at Penn State, I performed academic research on the surface chemistry and strength of commercial glasses, with added responsibilities of managing the thermal instrumentation suite in the Materials Characterization Laboratory within the Materials Research Institute. I have characterized several material types such as polymers, composites, metals and glasses with ThermoGravimetric Analyzer with Mass Spectrometry (TGA/MS), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), and Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA).
Listed skills include Materials Science, Surface Chemistry, Characterization, Materials, and 23 others.
