A K-12 mathematics specialist with 15 years of experience, a Ph.D in Educational Psychology, and a transformative worldview. I began my career in education as a 7th grade math teacher with Johnston County Public Schools in Wendell, NC. During that time I immersed myself in growing as an educator. Within three years I was the chair of our School Improvement Team and a leader of Mathematics PLTs in the district. In 2014 I left full time teaching to go to grad school full time. At NC State University, I studied educational psychology in the Teacher Education and Learning Sciences department. Here, I gained experience as a qualitative researcher and graduate teaching assistant. My graduate work focused on better understanding the psychology of middle school mathematics teacher teams and how students are impacted as a result. I continue this focus in my work with middle school math teachers today. From 2018 through November 2022, I was the mathematics specialist at Carroll Magnet Middle School in Raleigh, NC. In my role, I supported math teachers across grade levels with implementing high quality mathematics instruction. I worked to focus on equitable practices and meaningful tasks while also prioritizing relationships with the teachers I supported and the students they engaged. In my current role, I work with a team of curriculum specialists and product managers to ideate, iterate, and develop mathematics resources for Imagine Learning - a premium digital partner of Illustrative Mathematics. I am trained in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. While my dissertation research and other research experiences were purely qualitative in nature (ethnography, interviews, transcription, coding, theme building, etc.), I have had exposure to quantitative methods in coursework.
